Codeine phosphate

Very effective for management of back problem prior to and following surgery. Easy to swallow, and no side effects noted. I have been on this medication long term and have been decreasing the dosage as I feel this has been very effective when I was in severe pain. I would recommend it for those who have tried other analgesia and have found them ineffective. I would suggest a low dose initially as I had very severe pain and had to start on a higher dosage which can result in feeling sleepy. As I was quite immobile whilst waiting for surgery this was not a problem but maybe for others.
Although no longer using this medicine, at the time it was originally prescribed it really helped to keep the pain down to a tolerable level.
Unfortunately I now struggle to find any benefit from this medication, used for arthritis pain. It's difficult to take too many in view of potential side effect (constipation), and, as I still work & drive, care has to be taken with dose so not to be too sedated!
Prescribed as a constipating agent to treat diarrhoea-dominant Irritable Bowel Syndrome, rather than as a pain-killer, and has proved highly effective at low dosage (2x15mg per day).
An effective pain killer but as my GP puts it 'terribly constipating'!
